B&A provides plastics and tooling consulting services for domestic and international product development.  Offering assistance and advice from concept reviews all the way through to in-production tools and processes.  Services are available to provide support and alternatives to your existing skills along with  systems to aid the development, tracking and management of plastics and tooling  projects.
Instrumental in helping our clients achieve manufacturing goals, hone their skills and create a knowledgeable work force.  Our experience allows us the ability to assist your company with all of its plastics needs from product conception to production.  Project Management from new product development to streamlining existing manufacturing, our team has the skills to bring it all together.

Part Design

Smarter and Faster. Our associated design engineers work to improve functionality, reduce manufacturing costs and increase performance.  We utilize the latest in CAD software to develop, design, troubleshoot and model your products before you spend a penny on tooling.  We give you everything you need to make an informed decision.  We can take a sketch from a napkin and deliver SLA (Stereo Lithography), Machined,  cast or rubber prototypes in most cases within two weeks.

Molding Application Analysis

As a network of molding professionals we can bring you the necessary talent with expertise in any molding process that your product requires.  We work with numerous companies worldwide, supporting them with processing, troubleshooting and training knowledge achieved  through years of leading product development and working the production areas of all types of operations.  We have thousands of hours working hands-on with every known plastic process.  From injection molding, blow molding, injection-blow molding to extrusion, thermo or vacuum forming.  A process specific to the product requirement for a wide array of applications, from automotive components and consumer products to thorathentesis valves used in heart monitors.

Resin Identification

Resin manufacturers are constantly introducing new engineering grade resins that offer lighter weight,  improved strength, chemical resistance along with cosmetic and economic properties that are desirable for a particular product.  Choosing the proper plastic resin and pigmentation method requires a working knowledge of every polymer and every colorant available.  We can evaluate the function of the molded part to ensure the necessary physical, chemical and environmental properties are present, as well as eliminate the cost you would pay for unnecessary properties in resin, fit, function and appearance.  We saved a leading medical device manufacturer $1.5 million a year by eliminating unnecessary high gloss properties of the resin used for only one component.  We can arrange for color matched parts, resin samples as well as the identification and analysis of unidentified or questionable materials.

Tooling

Determining what tooling configuration, i.e. construction material choices, cooling channels, hot runner, cavity count, cores, slides, part orientation, etc. can dramatically affect your piece price.  Understanding the project's specific needs and targeting a piece price upfront is critical before spending unnecessary dollars on tooling costs that could have you paying higher prices down the road for mold maintenance and packaging activities  (fixturing, nesting, layering, etc.)  We prepare a thorough capacity analysis to alleviate your manufacturing risk as well as protect your return of investment based on your particular circumstances and product requirements before building the molds.

Vendor Identification

We work with suppliers capable of consistently providing the best possible product and service.  A product that exceeds your quality requirements, that is delivered on time and at a reasonable price.  As your liaison we help you keep costs low by identifying the best qualified vendors to fabricate your tools and mold your products.  Each shop has their own areas of expertise with a variety of components geared for a variety of markets and uses.  You don't need a brain surgeon to treat a hang nail.  Just like in any industry, ability is driven by experience and not everyone can have all the experience.  There are some molds that we would only have built by certain tool makers.  Some tools would be unreasonably expensive at this same shop.  The same applies to molders.

Mold Qualification

We take you through all the requirements to qualify and validate a tool and process.  Identifying and isolating all process variables that affect your success and efficiency depends on a disciplined mold qualification plan.  We document your product specifications, and test the molding process with statistical process and quality control studies that provide you with performance reports revealing part and process limits and what can cause them.  By identifying all the relevant variables that affect the molding process up front, you will already have the solutions and resources to correct and reverse them when they are later introduced during normal production runs.  You will have full control of your process when you can willfully introduce as well as eliminate a quality condition you specify.

Manufacturing Systems, Processes and Implementation

Our experience extends beyond part design, tooling and qualification  stages of a product.  We can help design your plant layout, research and specify manufacturing equipment and power requirements, set-up and start-up your equipment and train your employees to properly and safely run production.  We can help you with decisions about process cooling equipment, molding machines, granulators, resin dryers, robotics, end of arm tooling and assembly fixtures.

Expert Witness Testimony

Bircumshaw & Associates' expertise in plastics and related industries is available to law firms for contractual, equipment, product and production disputes.
